Volunteer Opportunities

Reading / Education

Volunteers will read The Wartville Wizard to elementary school students, 4-H participants and/or Girl Scout troops. This story takes place in the town of Wartville. Wartville citizens are illegally dumping their trash and litter: soda bottles under flowers, juice cans by mailboxes, and candy wrappers and papers on the road side. Every day the trash pile continues to grow. One man continues to clean the town litter and one day, he realizes he has the power to get rid of all the litter forever. He magically sends each piece of litter back to the person who dropped it. The town has a meeting to decide how to handle the problem.

Adopt-a-Highway

Volunteers adopt at least one mile (one way) to clean up four times a year, typically quarterly in January, April, July, and October. Miles will be marked with signs which can contain two lines of text selected by the volunteer (with Department of Transportation approval). There is no cost as KCMB provides a safety presentation, safety vests, litter gitters, gloves, and bags.

Recycling / Sorting

Volunteers spend time at the KCMB facility and learn how to identify what can be recycled, sort recyclables, and increase waste reduction. Volunteers can work during regular business hours which are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday, and 8:00 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday.

Beautification

Volunteers adopt a spot as a regular maintenance project, for which the volunteers are responsible to maintain the upkeep. Work is also available on other community beautification projects, including park and community gardens, graffiti control, and other projects as needed.

Cleanups / Special Events / Other

Volunteers work on case-by-case cleanups. Upon request by the county, KCMB assists in community cleanups where the property owner is unable to conduct the cleanup on their own due to illness, age, or other factors. These types of cleanups typically involve going on to a property and cleaning trash that has accumulated over time.
