Things You Can Do

Making Emergency Calls

All of us at Murray County E9-1-1 understand that having an emergency is not something anyone wants to think about, but it can happen. Will you be prepared if it does? Believe it or not, there are things you can do ahead of time that will help us, help you. Here are a few:

  • Post your address visibly from either direction at the end of your drive. If you live on a drive that has multiple homes, post the numbers visibly on the homes.
  • Stay calm when calling 911. If you are yelling, what you are saying will be distorted and the dispatcher won't be able to understand what you are saying, which may cause your call to be delayed.
  • Know the address where you need help. It is very important to know the address where you need help. Computer technology is a wonderful tool, but it doesn't always mean that it is correct. Therefore, you will always be asked where your emergency is or what the exact location of your emergency is.
  • Don't hang up when you call 911 accidentally. If you hang up before the dispatcher can answer the phone, they will assume something has happened to prevent you from completing the call, attempt to call you back, and/or send you help anyway.
